TCL opens Colleton location

TCL opened a new location in Colleton County in the summer of 2023, thanks to a special partnership with the Colleton Adult Learning Center (CALC) and the Colleton County School District. Housed at the CALC, TCL Colleton offers fast-track industrial, computer and allied health courses through its Kozak Office of Workforce Development. Classes include certified nurse aide (CNA), phlebotomy, medical administrative assistant, certified production technician, CompTIA and more.

BCSD, TCL announce Tides full-time high school dual enrollment program

Beaufort County School District and TCL will launch a new full-time dual enrollment option for ninth graders at TCL’s New River and Beaufort Mather Campuses in fall 2024. Students will take college-level, degree-seeking courses taught by TCL instructors. While in high school, BCSD Tides cohorts can earn two associate degrees and a technical certificate from TCL in a variety of college and career pathways.

tcl completes moor hall renovation; hub opens to students

The HUB opened in the fall of 2023 and serves as the college’s one-stop enrollment center, housing admissions, advising, financial aid, testing and more. A culmination of many years of work and community support, the building dates to 1939 and was original to the Mather School that opened in 1868 during Reconstruction and eventually became TCL. In 2020, The Mather School was named part of the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network by the National Park Service.

S.C. allocates $10 million to Regional Workforce Training Center

The State of South Carolina’s 2023 budget included a $10 million appropriation for TCL’s new Arthur E. Brown Regional Workforce Training Center to be built in Bluffton. The 50,000-square-foot, high-tech facility will allow the college to add and expand programs to meet current and future workforce needs in the Lowcountry and beyond. With capacity for up to 850 students, programs will include manufacturing, automated systems, logistics, business, computer technology and more. The project is estimated to cost around $26 million with a three-to-four year approval process and construction timeline. The college is partnering with local government and industry to secure remaining funding and will break ground in the spring of 2024.

TCL first S.C. technical college to earn special Veterans designation

The S.C. Department of Veterans Affairs (SCDVA) recognized TCL with a silver-grade academic award last November as part of its Military Academic Recognition Program. TCL is the first technical college in the state to receive the award, earning a “South Carolina Veteran Friendly Higher Education Institution” designation. The college joins the ranks of other S.C. higher education institutions such as Clemson and USC to have received the designation.

After a months-long, community-wide selection process, TCL announced “Tides” as its official mascot. The new mascot is a perfect representation of TCL’s vision to elevate the students and communities it serves and a fitting symbol of the steadfast spirit of TCL students and alumni.

Securities Operation Center opens on beaufort campus

The SOC recently opened at the Beaufort Mather Campus. Led by TCL IT staff and monitored by interns and students in the college’s cybersecurity program, the center’s aim is to evaluate incoming digital information and help protect the TCL community from cyberattacks and threats. Establishing a SOC is part of the college’s overall plan to apply for the National Security Agency’s Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity designation (CAE-CD).

TCL charters Tri-Alpha Honor Society, recognizing first-generation college students

TCL established a chapter of Alpha Alpha Alpha, an Honor Society specifically dedicated to first-generation college students. TCL President Dr. Richard Gough, a first-generation college student himself, was one of 14 faculty, staff and student inductees recognized at a special induction ceremony in November.

King Arthur Baking Company & TCL Culinary Institute of the South host recipe contest

CIS and America’s oldest baking company, King Arthur, launched the first ever “Tastes Like Home Recipe Contest” last fall. The contest invited CIS students and high school juniors and seniors in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper Counties to submit their favorite sweet and/or savory baking recipe that was inspired by tastes of home. Finalists will compete onsite at CIS later this spring for top prizes that include a trip to King Arthur Baking Company in Vermont along with CIS scholarships sponsored by King Arthur.
