TECHNOLOGY-BASED BIOLOGY
Apply technology to the study of living things in this exciting industry.
At its simplest, biotechnology is technology-based on biology. Biotechnology plays an important role in food and agriculture production. The use of technology with crops and animals is expected to be a critical factor in future efforts to increase crop yields and to expand food production.
Biotechnology is changing the face of our world and is a source of drugs, medical devices, forensic techniques, and new crops that are resistant to herbicides and pests.

Career and Education Opportunities
Biotech, pharmaceutical, research organizations, and chemical companies are the major employers in this sector. Job opportunities are expected to be best for graduates of applied science technology programs who are well trained on equipment in laboratories, clinical trials, diagnostics, and therapeutics or production facilities. Graduates of the Biotechnology program will understand the daily requirements of a career in technology and will be well prepared to assist scientists in laboratories. You may set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, monitor experiments, make observations, and calculate and record results.
Biotechnology graduates may analyze organic substances, such as blood, food, and drugs. Graduates of the program who take advantage of the transfer options with South Carolina Universities and Colleges may increase their earning potential and pursue careers in Biotechnology Education and more. This pathway can lead to a four-year degree in biology, genetics, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, and forensic science.
Students studying for an Associate of Science degree can earn a Certificate in Biotechnology during their course of study. Check with your TCL advisor and learn how.
