A program of inspiring performances and heartfelt recognitions drew a diverse audience
In a celebration of cultural heritage and community excellence, the Technical College of the Lowcountry hosted its Annual Black History Program on Feb. 15.
The event, held on the Beaufort Mather Campus in the MacLean Hall Auditorium, featured a lineup of inspiring performances and heartfelt recognitions, drawing a diverse audience eager to honor the richness of Black history and Black achievements.
Emceed by the dynamic duo of Ron Jenkins and Trystin Roberts, the program was comprised of soul-stirring performances by the United Voices of TCL and The Family Crusade Choir, which set a powerful tone for the evening. The choirs’ harmonious melodies resonated throughout the auditorium, captivating attendees with their impassioned renditions.
Adding a vibrant flair to the proceedings, Taylor Fulton took to the stage with a mesmerizing dance performance, showcasing both grace and athleticism. Fulton’s dynamic movements left the audience spellbound, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the evening.
Central to the event was the heartfelt recognition of three Black Community Heroes: Frieda R. Mitchell, representing the past, Clarence Jerome Daniel, representing the present, and Langston Simmons, representing the future. These distinguished individuals were lauded for their unwavering commitment to community service and their significant contributions to the community. Their dedication and leadership serve as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
Highlighting the importance of education and empowerment, the program also included the presentation of a scholarship to Darien Sheppard, the 2023 Frieda R. Mitchell Early Childhood Development Endowed Student Award. The award was presented by Kelli Boniecki, Director of TCL’s Early Care and Education Program. Sheppard’s academic excellence and dedication to her field exemplify the spirit of achievement and ambition that the Annual Black History Program seeks to foster and celebrate.
As the evening closed, attendees departed with a renewed sense of pride and appreciation for the cultural heritage and achievements of the Black community. TCL’s Annual Black History Program continues to serve as a vital platform for honoring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring future generations to strive for excellence and make a positive impact in their communities.
